Pastor Scott King, Ed.D
Advisory Council Member
The Yutzy School is blessed to have Dr. Scott King’s steady wisdom, servant leadership, and deep love for the Garnett community on our Advisory Council. His commitment to guiding families in both faith and learning aligns beautifully with the heart and mission of our school.
Pastor Scott King serves as the Lead Pastor of Garnett Church of the Nazarene, a position he has held since August 2022. He brings nearly three decades of ministry leadership, community service, and practical wisdom to The Yutzy School Advisory Council. He has served in pastoral ministry across the United States and has spent the past three and a half years serving families and churches in the Garnett area.
Pastor King began his ministry through Crisis Church Ministries, where he spent the first 17 years helping struggling congregations regain health and stability—often relocating every two to three years to meet urgent needs. His work has taken him to communities in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Texas, Florida, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Christian ministry and a doctorate in Leadership and Professional Development from Trevecca Nazarene University, as well as a master’s degree in Pastoral Leadershipfrom Olivet Nazarene University. His leadership philosophy is deeply shaped by Romans 12:2, emphasizing both spiritual and practical renewal of the mind.
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Pastor King is a strong advocate for Christian education, because "it provides students with a biblical foundation and a thoughtful Christian worldview to engage the world with clarity and confidence." He values education that helps young people understand not only what they believe, but why they believe it. His experience serving families and mentoring future leaders brings valuable perspective to The Yutzy School as it prepares students for lives of faith, service, and responsibility.
In addition to pastoral ministry, Pastor King has a long history of hands-on community leadership. In West Virginia, he founded a Compassionate Ministry Center that served “grandfamilies”—households where grandparents were raising grandchildren due to the effects of the drug crisis. The program addressed financial literacy, technology skills, and school support, partnering with multiple community organizations. He also launched a food pantry focused on workforce development, helping individuals become employable through practical training and partnerships with local businesses.
Pastor King currently serves on the Church of the Nazarene Joplin District’s Credentials and Studies committee and is developing a district learning center in partnership with Nazarene Bible College. He is also the president of the Garnett Ministerial Alliance, supporting collaboration among local churches.
Before and alongside ministry, Pastor King served for nearly 29 years as a paramedic and firefighter—often bi-vocationally—bringing real-world experience, compassion, and calm leadership into both emergency services and pastoral care.
He and his wife Ester are the parents of four children, one of whom has gone to be with the Lord, and they are proud grandparents to one granddaughter. Pastor King enjoys scuba diving, fishing, hunting, traveling, and most of all, spending time with his family. Raised in Virginia Beach, he grew up surfing before answering God’s call to pastoral ministry—first at age 16, then fully committing to that call in early adulthood.
The Yutzy School is grateful for Pastor King’s wisdom, humility, and steadfast commitment to Christ-centered education and community leadership.
