Homeschool Families Welcome

We believe parents have a God-given responsibility for their children’s education (Proverbs 22:6; Deuteronomy 6:6–7). The Yutzy School exists to support and strengthen families, not to replace the work they are already doing.

To that end, we offer several options for enrichment, hands-on learning, and Christ-centered community—allowing families to remain fully committed to homeschooling while accessing additional resources, encouragement, and meaningful connection along the way.

Homeschool learning.png

Currently, we offer music classes (for ages 6-10) and choir (for 11-17 year-olds)  to homeschoolers at no cost. We will be offering Badger Club (Hands-on STEM enrichment activities) again this spring. We also love inviting homeschoolers to some of our other activities—such as a kickball tournament (last fall) and our Field Day at the end of each year.

This fall, we plan to add sports and fine arts programs, along with other opportunities that allow students to learn and connect with others while families maintain their homeschool flexibility.

Whether families are curious about homeschool outcomes, want credible data to share with others, or are preparing to speak with schools or officials, NHERI provides current research and insights to inform and support the homeschool community.

How to homeschool legally in Kansas

Families in Kansas enjoy strong homeschool freedom and flexibility. Below is a clear overview of how homeschooling works under Kansas law, along with trusted links for families who want to explore further.

How Kansas Defines Homeschooling

Kansas does not use the term “homeschool” in statute. Instead, homeschools are legally recognized as Non-Accredited Private Schools (NAPS).

This means:

  • Parents may legally educate their children at home

  • The homeschool functions as a private school, not a public program

Registration Requirement (Simple & One-Time)

Kansas requires homeschools to:

  • Register once with the Kansas State Board of Education

  • Provide only a school name and address

  • Pay no fee

  • No approval process required

Registration is not annual unless your information changes.

Official KSDE Fact Sheet (PDF):
https://www.ksde.gov/portals/0/ecsets/factsheets/factsheet-homeschool.pdf

Compulsory Attendance

Kansas law requires school attendance for children ages:

  • 7 through 18

Homeschooling fully satisfies this requirement when properly registered.

Instruction Time Expectations

Kansas expects instruction to be “substantially equivalent” to public school, which is commonly understood as:

  • Approximately 186 days

  • About 1,116 instructional hours per year (grades 1–11)

Families retain flexibility in how those hours are scheduled and delivered.

Teacher Qualifications

  • Parents do not need teaching certification

  • Instruction must be provided by a “competent instructor”

Kansas does not define this narrowly, giving families wide discretion.

Curriculum, Subjects & Testing

Kansas does not require:

  • State-approved curriculum

  • Specific subjects

  • Standardized testing

  • Portfolio submission

Families are free to choose materials that align with their values, goals, and children’s needs.

Records & Best Practices

While Kansas does not mandate recordkeeping, families are encouraged to maintain:

  • Attendance records

  • Basic lesson plans or calendars

  • Samples of student work

This is wise for personal documentation and future transitions.

While Kansas offers strong homeschool freedoms, having a trusted legal resource can be reassuring—especially for new homeschool families or those navigating unique situations.
