Students Light Up the Classroom with Hands-On STEAM Project

As part of our STEAM program students learned all about curcuits and even made their own with paper, tinfoil and small batteries.

Students at The Yutzy School are illuminating their understanding of science with an exciting hands-on project that brings electricity to life. As part of the school’s science unit on electricity and circuits, students recently created closed circuit models using tinfoil, LED lights, batteries, glue, and tape.

The activity engaged students in constructing working circuits complete with make-shift switches that allowed them to turn their lights on and off. Experimenting with various configurations, students explored how adding extra batteries could brighten their lights and how to design circuits with both straight runs and multiple turns.

This project serves as a foundation for the students' next step: working with the "Makey Makey," an interactive circuit board that will challenge them to apply their newfound knowledge in creative and innovative ways throughout the semester.

"This project is a perfect example of our approach to STEM education at The Yutzy School," said Ric Mitchell, Head of School. "Our students aren’t just learning science—they’re doing science, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see their curiosity and problem-solving skills in action."

By incorporating hands-on activities like this, The Yutzy School emphasizes discovery-based learning, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.
