“Christ is Risen!”
This year at The Yutzy School, we explored a meaningful Greek Easter tradition centered on Christ through a simple but powerful symbol—the red egg.
In this tradition, eggs are dyed a deep red to represent the blood of Jesus Christ, shed for us on the cross. The egg itself symbolizes the sealed tomb. Just as new life breaks forth from an egg, the Resurrection reminds us that Jesus broke forth from the grave, conquering death and bringing new life to all who believe.
After preparing our red eggs, students took part in a fun and meaningful Greek game called tsougrisma—the traditional “egg tapping” game. As part of the experience, students also learned to say the traditional Easter greeting in Greek. One student approaches another and says:
Χριστός ἀνέστη! (“Christos Anesti!” — Christ is risen!)
The other replies:
Ἀληθῶς ἀνέστη! (“Alithos Anesti!” — Truly He is risen!)
The two then gently tap their eggs together, each trying to crack the other’s egg without breaking their own.
While it’s an fun activity, it also carries a deeper message. The cracking of the egg reminds us of the stone being miraculously rolled away from the tomb. What once seemed sealed and final was opened by the power of God.
It is a simple tradition—but a powerful one. It reminds us that Easter is a celebration of the victory Jesus Christ has won over both sin and death.
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
